Mathematics is fundamental in the education of engineers, as it allows them to model and solve complex problems in various areas. However, there is an issue in how mathematics is taught, where students often need help identifying the practical application of the concepts learned in the first semesters. There may need to be more than the traditional model of teaching mathematics, with an expository focus in the classroom, to prepare engineers for real-world challenges. There is a need to incorporate technological resources and more interactive teaching methodologies, such as Problem-Based Learning or Project-Based Learning, which enable students to apply mathematics in specific and relevant situations. Mathematics in engineering should be contextualized and articulated so students understand its utility. For this, mathematics faculty need knowledge of the subject and sensitivity toward teaching mathematics practically and in practice. A challenge is presented for mathematics educators: to know what mathematics to teach and how to prepare them effectively so that students see the relevance of this discipline in their future professional careers.
