Abstract

Male goats display sexual seasonality. In male goats located in the Comarca Lagunera from Coahuila, a light treatment stimulates their sexual activity during the rest season; these males are called "sexually active male goats" (SA). This study aimed to determine whether the SA can stimulate the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone from other bucks during the sexual rest period. A group of males (n = 4) were submitted to the natural variations of the photoperiod and were called sexually inactive males (SI). Another group of males (n = 4) was submitted to 2.5 months of artificial long days (16 h of light per day) starting on November 1 and were called sexually active males (SA). On April 4, one group of males in sexual rest (n = 6) was joined with a SI male, while another group (n = 6) was joined with a SA male. Introducing the SA male significantly increased LH concentrations (3.1 ± 0.6 ng/mL), which were higher than in the group of males where SI male was introduced (0.2 ± 0.06 ng/mL). Also, testosterone concentrations were higher in males in contact with the SA male than in those in contact with the SI male. These results show that SA male goats stimulate LH and testosterone secretion in other males during sexual rest. In addition, they indicate that in males, as in female goats, the photoperiod and socio-sexual interactions can stimulate their sexual activity during the seasonal sexual rest.
