Abstract

A study on a herd of 24 mature goats to evaluate diets containing 30 per cent wastes of pigs, goats and dairy cattle in isoproteic diets was carried out; besides, monensin at 30 ppm was added. Diets with and without monensin, including the control were tested. Weight increments and in vivo digestibility as well as the concentration of volatile fatty acids in the ruminal liquid (VFA) were evaluated. Duration of the feeding test and the in vivo digestibility test lasted for 56 days and five days, respectively. The concentration of VFA was determined from the ruminal liquid extracted at cero, three and six hours after feeding. A statistical method using a four per two factorial experimental design in at random blocks with covariance was evaluated. To obtain the tendency of response orthogonal polynomia were used. The digestibility of the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude fiber (CF) and crude protein (CP) under completly at random design using also an homogeneity variance were evaluated. With regard to the increments of weight, no statistical differences at five per cent of probability were found. With respect to digestibility of DM, OM, CF and CP again no statistical differences at five per cent of probability were found. With regard to the concentration of VFA an increment in the proportion of the propionic acid on the diets containing monensin was observed. The results indicated that: a) it is possible to add animal wastes to the diet in a proportion of 30 per cent, since the weight increments were similar to those obtained with the traditional diet; b) there is no difference among the digestibility of different diets; c) the monensin increases the propionic acid concentrations in the rumen.
