Abstract

During a 56 day period, which was divided into two 28 day stages, the dry matter intake, the daily gain, and the feed efficiency were measured on 16 female sheep fed ad libitum. Three aims were taken into consideration; a) to evaluate the productive behavior of fedlot sheep when adding the sodic monensin and/or vitamins of B complex to the diet; b) to determine the factibility of using vitamins of B complex instead of sodic monensin, and c) to show that the addition of these vitamins into the ruminant diet is necessary. During the two feeding stages, the use of vitamins did not have the influence (P> .05) on the dry matter intake. This variable was affected by the sodic monensin (P< .05) during the second stage, with an 11% increment of the feed consumption. The daily gain was bigger (P< .05) because of the use of monensin, vitamins of B complex or both, as compared to control by 75 g d 1, 51 g d and 41 g d1 respectively. The feed effciency was improved (P< .05) by 25% with the use of monensin, 26.8 % when vitamins of B complex were added and 21.6% when both products were used simultaneously.
