Lorenzo Martínez Medina: a 20th-century agronomist from northeastern Mexico

Abstract

The influence of Dr. Lorenzo Martínez Medina on the Mexican countryside encompasses multiple conceptual, academic, and political elements. His work as an academic, researcher, and public official shows a remarkable capacity for analysis and a clear intelligence that has always had as its central points of interest the social dynamics and complexities of the Mexican countryside. Martínez Medina, as will be seen later, never forgot that the countryside and the agrarian world of the Mexican Northeast were inhabited by people, men and women who have made these realities their life contexts. His clear interest in social subjects –rather than in production per se- explains in many ways his humanistic vision of the countryside, which was always characterized by a profound social and political awareness of the rural issue in the country.
