Abstract

In this investigation 24 and 23 genotypes of safflower were evaluated under irrigated and dryland conditions respectively using a randomized block design with an objective of studying the direct and indirect effects of different biometrical characters influencing the oil content in safflower.

The analysis of variance indicated substantial variability for seed yield, percent oil, heads/plant, seed weight, plant height, primary branches/plant under irrigated and dryland conditions simultaneously. Exists a positive and significant correlation between seed yield/ha with yield/plant and percent oil under irrigated and drought conditions. An association was observed between yield and seeds/head under drought conditions. The analysis of path coefficient for oil content in safflower under irrigated condition indicated the influence of direct effects from seed weight, seeds/head, yield/plant and plant height. The oil content under drought condition was influenced directly from yield/plant, plant height and number of heads per plant.
