In this investigation six females and 13 males and their 78 hybrids were evaluated using a randomized block design with two replications, with an object of identifying better parents with higher values of general combining ability (GCA), and crosses with higher values of specific combining ability (SCA) and to study the heterosis for fodder and other agronomic traits. The analysis of variance indi- cated significant differences for GCA in female and males for the yield of green and dry fodder, stem diameter (except in females), number of leaves per plant, plant height and flag leaf area, revealing the additive gene action in the inheritan- ce of these traits. The females were manifested higher values of GCA for the ma- jority of the characters studied on comparison with the males.
The females 1, 3 and 4, and males 19, 14, 16 and 17 were identified as superior combiners for fodder and other quantitative characters. Heterosis over better parent for green and dry fodder were recorded in 35.9 and 32.1% of the cros- ses studied respectively. The heterosis for green and dry fodder varied from -63 to 52.8% and -74.5 to 54.4% respectively over superior parent.
