The present study was conducted in ranch La Lobera, municipality of Galeana, Nuevo León. The objetives of the study were: monitoring animal behavior, and utilization of paddocks under short duration grazing in order to determine the optimal time of occupation. There were two seasons under consideration: a green season and a dry season. In both cases utilization increased with distance from water. The time of starting and ending of the resting area was similar in both seasons. The time spent in getting to the watering point was 17 minutes approximately. The time spent in watering point averaged four hours, and the number of defecations was 2.5/ day approximatly. Major activities during both seasons were grazing time followed by resting. In the winter, animals spent more time grazing and less time searching for food, as compared with those of the summer time. Number of bites/minute varied for each day during the study. Distance from water has no effect on forage utilization but it is determined by forage quantity, quality and distribution in specific areas within the pastures. Animal behavior is the most important tool to determine the very best time of occupation in paddocks.
