The Juglans nigra L. is a potential source of genetic diversity that can be used as a graft bearer and fine wood producer. Nevertheless, one of the greater problems is its limited use because it presents a low percentage of germination and emergency; for such reason, this research was lead to evaluate the effect of the stratification and giberelic acid on germination, emergency and development of the plant. The study was carried out under a completely random design, with factorial adjustment 3x4 in four replications. The A factor was the 2 o Cs stratification (0, 30 and 60 days); factor B was the 12 hours immersion in GA 3 (0, 500, 650 and 800 ppm). The ANVA did not detect significance in the interaction for the variables in study; factor B was not significant either for the variables germination and height of plant, but for emergency.
In factor A a highly significant difference was found (P £ 0.01) for germination and emergency, but only a significant difference (P £ 0.05) for height of plant. The Tuckey test (P £ 0.01) reports that 60 days of stratification accelerated and in creased the germination up to 60 % and the emergency to 83 %; whereas Tuckey (P £ 0.05) reports an effect on height of plant. In factor B; for emergency, Tukey (P £ 0.05) reports that 800 ppm of GA 3 accelerated and increased up to 78 %. The results indicate that the stratification influences the germination and height of plant, whereas the emergency, the stratification and GA 3.
