Hydrogen cyanamid and cutting back effects on bud bursting of apple tree cv. Rome beauty Lawspur

The chilling requirements for apple tree cv. Rome beauty Lawspur are in the order of 1200 hours. These high requirements reduce bud burst and delay blooming time, which may be a positive effect avoiding late frost problems, but lowering yield per tree given low bud burst (16%). In order to get an alternative to this problem, an experiment was undertaken during the winter period of 1989-1990 and the spring of 1990 at the Universidad Autonoma Agraria Antonio Narro Fruit Plant Experimental Station "Los Lirios", at the Sierra de Arteaga, state of Coahuila, Mexico. It was designed to test the effectiveness of hydrogen cyanamid (HC) to overcome the problem; the traits were five HC concentrations (1,2,3,4 and 5%), and No-HC as the control, combined with cutting back and no pruning. The results indicated traits differences (P<.01) in 2 and 3 years old woody branches although the response among doses was similar; the 1% treatment induced the highest bud burst with 64.5%. For all HC traits bud burst was more uniform, suggesting that blooming time can also be uniform. The cutting back and pruning showed no effects. From these results can be stated that HC was sufficient to improved bud burst.
