Combining ability estimation in maize single crosses to develop double hybrids

Combining abilities (CA) of single crosses are not used as a selection criterion for double hybrids prediction as it is commonly done for inbred lines. This study explored the former criterion as an alternative procedure useful for double hybrids formation.
One of the outstanding features of this research was the identification of single crosses with high CA effects. Estimates were made on the basis of average performance shown by each single cross throughout its crosses. For double hybrids prediction, preponderance indexes were added up and their mean extracted from involved single crosses.
Single crosses with a better combining ability for several traits were as follows: (4x11), (4x1), (4x2), (1x16) and (13x16). The ones with high preponderance for yield: (13x4), (4x16), (4x2) and (4x9). Predicted double hybrids, considering both good combining ability and proponderance for yield: (13x4)x(1x6), (16x2)x (8x4), (13x10)x(2x3), and (11x16)x(4x9).
The genetic diversity observed among genotypes allowed the development of double hybrids which were graded by their heterosis and agronomic derisability; the most qualified for yield were: (13x4)x(16x2), (13x11)x(16x2) and (1x5)x(4x2).
