Abstract

he gastrointestinal parasite burden in sheep (Ovis aries L.) is a factor that limits their production in the tropic and subtropic areas, since the ap plication of chemicals to control a high cost. The aim of this study was to compare the genetic resistance and food with helminth load in Katahdin lambs and Pelibuey breeds in southeastern Mexican tropics. Katahdin lambs were used and average blood Pelibuey Dorper crosses, three to four months of age with a body weight of 20.09 ± 2.88 kg. The treatments were:  1) Pelibuey high supplementation (PHS), 2) Pelibuey low supplementa tion (PLS), 3) high supplementation Katahdin (KHS) and 4) low supple mentation Katahdin (KLS). High supplementation consisted of 1% of their weight in grain yellow corn every day; for the low supplementation 100 g of the same seed were provided every day. Body condition was determined (BC) and FAMACHA index by testing Wilkoxon. Daily gain weight (DWG) was assessed, eggs per gram of feces (HGF) and packed cell volume (PCV); and  also the gender of gastrointestinal parasites was identified. A completely randomized design with factorial arrangement 2 x 2 was used. No differ ences were found for any variable by breed effect (p>0.05). However, the supplementation affected (p<0.01) the DWG: 4.64 ± 2.23 kg with high supplementation and 2.43 ± 2.34 kg with low supplementation. The PCV showed no differences between breeds (p>0.05). The Katahdin breed was heavier than sheep (p<0.0001) in KAS, body weight was 22.96 + 0.36 kg and + 0.33 KBS was 22.06 kg. High supplementation lambs were heavier than those with low supplementation (p<0.0001). In PHS the body weight was 19.90 + 0.33 kg, and PLS was 17.70 + 0.38 kg. Negative correlation was found (p=0.01) between the BC-HGH variables (r = -0.241) and FAMA CHA-HGH index (r = -0.198). The only genera present were Haemonchus spp. and Trichostrongylus spp.
