Abstract

An assay to evaluate the performance of 27 genotypes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) under irrigation conditions was undertaken at Zacatepec state of Morelos in Central-South Mexico, during spring-summer, 1993. The objectives of this work were: 1)to evaluate variability in quantitative traits; 2)to, estimate three kinds of heterosis; and 3)to compare phenotypic correlations and path analysis. The parental, hybrids and group of genotypes analysis of variance showed statistical differences for practically all traits but mainly yield, panicle length, plant height, days to maturity, numbers of panicles per plant, grains per panicle, whole grains and weight of thousand grains. The genotype with highers yield were RHS 852, Morelos A-92 and crosses (Champoton A-80 x Morelos A-92) and (Sureste A-90 x CAEZ 118). A true positive heterosis was documented for hybrids (Champoton A- 80 x Morelos A-92) and (RHS 883 x Chiapas A-84); positive heterobeltiosis was only shown in the last cross. Positive correlations were observed among yield and the others main traits listed above. The number stems per plant had the highest direct effect for yield when path analysis was carried on the 27 genotypes but it was the trait number of panicle per plant the main character for direct and indirect effects for individual hybrids. True differences were detected between parents and hybrids although these were not superior in grain yield tan the best parent.
